How to engage children without screen time?

by Lokesh Dhiran, 24 Jul 2024

Read books together:

Reading with your child is a great way to engage their imagination, encourage literacy, and spend quality time together. You can read aloud to your child, or have them read to you. When Unnati was around a year old, I used to read her books at bedtime. This was our routine. She would not sleep without a book being read to her.

Play board games: Board games & Activity Books (https://theactivitybooks.com/)  are a fun way to teach children how to take turns, work together, and develop problem-solving skills. There are plenty of games available for all age ranges and interests.

Arts and crafts: Children love to create and explore their artistic side. You can provide them with art supplies and encourage them to make drawings, paintings, or sculptures. This is Manisha's department. MY only job is to give out the correct measurements and ideas to actually build it so that it looks proportionate. We build a complete Doll house (https://photos.app.goo.gl/7kwsynGcFZ4sMLnd6) during the pandemic from waste cardboard boxes. Manisha and Unnati make birthday cards and souvenirs for relatives and friends.

Outdoor activities: Spending time outdoors can help children develop physical coordination and problem-solving skills. Take them for a hike, a bike ride, or a trip to the park.

Cooking together: Cooking together is a great way to teach children about nutrition, healthy eating habits, and kitchen safety. It's also a fun way to bond and spend time together. Unnati makes a mean sandwich (read assembles)

Music: Encourage your child to explore music by listening to different genres, playing instruments, or singing together. Music can help develop creativity, coordination, and memory skills. Alexa has been Unnati's best friend lately. Its simple to use and the collection is vast. Morning time is bhajan time, rest of the day its her personal jukebox. Mind you Alexa is 50% owned by Unnati. She paid from her piggy bank :)

Remember, the most important thing is to spend quality time with your child, and to engage with them in activities that they enjoy and find rewarding. Check out our activity books which you can solve along with your child - Make Learning Fun
