How can gardening help children?

by Lokesh Dhiran, 24 Jul 2024

Gardening can be an excellent way for children to learn about nature, nutrition, and responsibility while also providing a fun and engaging activity. Here are some ways gardening can benefit children:

Educational: Gardening can provide children with hands-on learning experiences about plants, insects, and the environment. They can learn about the different parts of plants, how they grow, and what they need to survive. Additionally, they can learn about the importance of composting and how it contributes to a healthy garden.

Health: Gardening can promote physical activity, as children will be required to move around and engage in tasks such as digging, weeding, and planting. It can also encourage healthier eating habits by exposing children to fresh fruits and vegetables that they helped grow.

Responsibility: Gardening can teach children about responsibility and the importance of taking care of something. They can learn about the commitment required to maintain a healthy garden and the consequences of neglecting it. Potting and watering are the two common responsibilities that Unnati takes up for our garden. Typically holidays are reserved for all gardening related activities for Unnati.

Mental Health: Gardening can also have a positive impact on children's mental health by providing a relaxing and calming activity that allows them to connect with nature.

Creativity: Gardening can encourage children to be creative and express themselves through garden design, plant selection, and decoration. Unnati prepares small garlands (mala) with flowers from our terrace garden. She is always excited which color flowers are present and how she can combine them to create something new.

Thanks to the efforts from my wife, Manisha that we have 30-35 plants in our garden, which Unnati can see, touch and feel and be close to nature. Overall, gardening can be an enjoyable and rewarding activity for children that provides numerous educational and developmental benefits.
